Chapter 52 – Shenzhen to Kunming to Luang Prabang
I tried the High-speed train from China to Laos. It departs from Kunming, the capital of Yunan province, and travels to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, via Luang Prabang where I will be stopping. First I had to fly from Shenzhen to Kunming and check into a hotel near the Kunming South railway station. I had to swap my virtual ticket for a paper ticket at the vast and cavernous Kunming South Railway Station. The next morning, I went to the special area for people taking the China-Laos international rail line. The train was signed in Chinese and Lao Script. Departure was right on time at 08:08. We had to disembark and have our luggage X-rayed and passports checked at Mohan, the China Border. We re-boarded the train and got off again to repeat the process at Botan, the border with Laos. The average speed of the train is around 160 Km/H. After a 7.5-hour train journey, we arrived at Luang Prabang, where I was met by a driver from the “On the Mekong” hotel/resort and then checked in. I was just in time to help celebrate the hotel manager's birthday.
