In the late nineteen fifties, the Soviet Moskvich was on the verge of entering the American market. Thousands of cars were planned for export, and after successful sales in Europe, the United States seemed like the logical next step.
Everything changed in nineteen sixty, when a U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union, triggering a major international scandal involving pilot Francis Gary Powers. The political fallout quickly damaged any hopes for economic cooperation between the USSR and the United States - and the Moskvich project quietly disappeared.
In this video, we explore how a Cold War spy scandal affected the fate of a Soviet car, why the Moskvich never made it to America, and how politics once again proved stronger than economics.
