Thiruvathirakali is believed to have originated from the Thiruvathira festival which falls in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (Dec-Jan). Thiruvathira (Ardra in Sanskrit and Tamil) is considered to be the birth star of Lord Shiva. Ladies perform Vrutham (selective fasting without rice items) after an early morning Thudichu kuli (festive bath). The full day festivities include rituals like Nivedyam (offerings to the deities), Ettangadi (unique offering consisting of various yams and pulses), Pathirapoo choodal (ceremonial floral adorning of ladies at midnight) and Thiruvathirakali spanning throughout the night.
