MATT ARCHBOLD | TALK TO THE DR. | EP #20
Matt talks about his early days in the water as a grom, surfing with his buddies at T Street and the pier. He got his first surfboard at 11 years old and vividly remembers standing up on a wave and riding it all the way to shore at T Street. From that moment on, he was hooked, all he wanted to do was surf.
His first surf trip was with his mom and brother to Oahu, and not long after, he landed a sponsorship with Hobie.
He shares how he started out riding single fins and twin fins, but when Simon Anderson invented the thruster, everything changed. By the age of 14, he knew he wanted to be a pro surfer, and by 16, he was on tour, competing against legends like Pottz, Derek Ho, Dane Kealoha, MR, Shaun Tomson, Rabbit, Tom Carroll, and Occy.
Matt also talks about a move he pioneered, the lean-forward, lay-back and how, during that time, he truly felt like he was traveling the world and living the dream. Still, he remembers feeling frustrated by the judging criteria of that era, which eventually took a toll on him.
Later, Timmy Patterson shaped him a couple of boards, and Matt headed to the North Shore, where he ended up reinventing himself, riding super short boards at a pumping Off The Wall.
He also shares his top five favorite surfers of all time.
Matt talks about how Dane Kealoha showed him the ropes on the North Shore, his deep love and respect for Herbie Fletcher, and the major influence Roy Gonzales has had in his life.
Finally, he shares what he’s been up to lately with his brand Archy’s Garage, and how stoked he is to finally have his passport back after two years.
