Our pilot Steve McCurrach assisted in the rhino dehorning mission at Phinda that was recently conducted over a 48-hour period.
The plan was to get the first customers as close to the centre of operations as possible, avoiding an unnecessary drive to a starting point and literally within ‘circuit’ the first candidate was geo pinned and the heli called in.
Starting before first light on Day 1 with a briefing between all participants and no shortage of excitement. With two teams of ground crew, Steve and his crewman Craig, and the Heli alongside and a target of 30 rhino to be de-horned, you can imagine the atmosphere.
On day two, we had 16 de-hornings.
Each horn removed, was measured, weighed and catalogued, and moved from the reserve to a secure location for storage.
The total trip counter for the 2 days was 2,350kms.
