Greenland, the world's largest island, is still not independent. Just like India was once under British rule, Greenland remains under Denmark’s control. But why hasn’t it gained independence yet?
Denmark-Norway took over Greenland in 1721. After the Denmark-Norway union dissolved in 1814, Denmark fully controlled Greenland. In 1953, Greenland officially became part of Denmark. Later, in 1979 and 2009, Greenland was granted more autonomy, including control over land resources and local administration. However, Denmark still handles its foreign policy and security.
Despite this, Greenland has not separated from Denmark for a few reasons. Greenlanders hold Danish citizenship, allowing them to travel and work across Europe freely. Denmark provides 25% of Greenland’s GDP through financial aid and offers free education, free healthcare, and military security. With a small population of only 57,000, most residents prefer to stay connected to Denmark due to these benefits.
