A quirky top-of-the-range Trabant 601S Deluxe in excellent condition with just 27,583 miles from new.
MODEL HISTORY
The Trabant was the only vehicle for over 18 million East German occupants. Available as a Limousine, (Saloon) or Kombi, (Estate) it remained largely unchanged throughout its 34-year history and gives a fascinating insight into this panned economy. Waiting times were over 10 years and seven-year old examples cost more than new ones. Fully exposed to the world after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 this utterly chirpy little chappie is immense fun.
EQUIPMENT
Duroplast bodywork, chrome bumpers, bumper over-riders, front side window air deflectors, opening rear windows, sunroof, 26 litre fuel tank, sound insulation, ignition steering lock, internal petrol switch, ashtray, flowmeter, reserve fuel light, horn, hazard lights, front storage tray, radio, 4-speed wipers, parking light, heated rear window, interior light, rear window blinds, headlight beam adjustment, tripmeter, heating and ventilation, heated front screen, reclining seats.
EXTERIOR
Factory standard Champagner-beige with a contrasting Papyrusweis roof this Trabant suits its colour scheme perfectly and looks charming. The Duroplast bodywork, (a mixture of cotton and resin) is perfect with no fractures. All the correct badging remains intact including the important 'Deluxe' designation. The rear colour coded rubber lens casing has some paint flake and the rear chrome bumper has a tiny mark. This is a beautifully preserved, unmolested example which has been cherished and would make any new owner immensely proud.
INTERIOR
This fantastic Trabant has a perfect interior. All the brown carpeting, matching door cards and patterned seat material is wonderful and reflective of the very low mileage covered. There is a slight clouding to the rear view mirror. Controls and gauges all function including the fascinating LED flowmeter monitoring the rate of fuel flow and hence economy. The boot area is clean with bagged jack and covered spare wheel in situ. Surprisingly spacious this little car is guaranteed to appeal and will always be centre stage.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Incredible fun will be had as this 600cc two stroke engine eagerly produces its 26bhp with a unique exhaust pop. Very simple design with no oil pumps, water pumps, timing belts or valves so making maintenance very affordable. A clean engine bay will please onlookers. The four-speed column mounted transmission is perfect but familiarisation will be required to assist correct gear selection!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Sealed steel rims with four point fixing shod in tyres with excellent tread. The brakes are a drum and shoe configuration with fully independent two hydraulic circuits. A responsive and simple system perfectly adequate for the light weight of the vehicle.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in December 1987 and owned by a Mr Roland Janas this stunning example was acquired by a Scottish collector, Mr Dobson, in September 2011 who searched hard for the right vehicle. Now available for a lucky new owner to enjoy and marvel after a difficult decision to downsize a glorious and eccentric personal collection.
