The Great Wall of China? He never mentioned it. Tea? Never saw it. Chopsticks? Not a word. These omissions make scholars wonder: did Marco Polo even go to China? Or did he cobble together stories from other travelers, creating the most successful hoax in medieval history?
But then there are the details he got impossibly right. The paper money. The coal. The precise descriptions of places, customs, and technologies that wouldn't be verified for centuries. Chinese documents discovered in 1940—written by people who never heard of Marco Polo—confirm parts of his story.
