Genesis Does - Sega Sports Games

Sports games played a pivotal role in the success of Sega during the 16-bit era. They started early, cultivating different sports back up by celebrity endorsements and major print and TV ad campaigns. It ultimately helped Sega to controlling 50%+ of the US gaming market for years. In this episode, we look at some of those games that were either developed, published, or both, by Sega.

Episode Notes:

1. I used my Mega SG to capture these games.

2. I had major troubles getting the World Series Baseball games to play. I'm not sure if it was a Mega SG thing, a Mega SD thing, or what. 95 and up had major graphical issues.

3. I used some of these games demo or cpu vs cpu modes to help me capture footage. I'm really familiar with most of these games gameplay, but the sheer volume of games was daunting to capture. The demo mode helped ease some of burden.

4. I own about half these games today physically. After playing some of them again, I think I may go for a full Sega Sports collection. Most of their games are still really fun.

5. The music used in various places throughout this video is from Joe Montana Football for the Sega CD. The ending monologue music is from Panzer Dragoon.

6. Sega's output of sports titles took a nose dive on the Saturn right from day 1. There was no launch football title, baseball title, hockey title, or boxing title for the platform. Not even by the original September launch date.

7. Sega also failed the Sega CD in a similar way. I would have killed for a Sega CD Greatest Heavyweights or World Series Baseball.

8. If you guys like this episode, I'll look into doing one covering the many 3rd party sports titles on the Genesis. The library is full of them, some of em quite good.
