“The anterior intermeniscal ligament extends between the anterior horns of the medial and lateral menisci.

This structure is known by various names: the anterior inter-meniscal ligament (AIML), transverse meniscal ligament, ligamentum transversum genus, menisco-meniscal ligament, anterior transverse ligament, or inter-meniscal ligament. Its reported prevalence ranges from 3.6% to 100%.


A high-signal-intensity line is often observed in the lateral meniscus (LM), at the ligament’s attachment to the anterior horn’s superior surface. This line could be misinterpreted as an anterior horn tear.”

This structure behind ARMM is an anterior intermeniscal ligament, so you can see that the posterior fibers of this medial meniscus anterior horn are stuck like this because the Posterior fibers of the MM anterior horn attach to the transverse ligament. This finding is normal. An absent anterior root medial meniscus attachment is reported in 3% of individuals; the medial meniscus is instead stabilized by the anterior inter-meniscal ligament (AIML)

At the attachment of the ligament onto the superior surface of the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus, there is commonly a high-signal-intensity line. This line can be mistaken for an anterior horn tear.

The yellow-marked medial and pink-marked lateral meniscus are visible.
The anterior intermeniscal ligament is highlighted in purple.
As seen in the axial image, the medial meniscus appears anterior to the anterior intermeniscal ligament, and the lateral meniscus is located posterior to it.
Now, let's look at the sagittal image
If we obtain a sagittal image at the level of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus, the anterior horn of the medial meniscus will appear more anteriorly. I would like to emphasize two points here.
First, anterior meniscal root subluxation is a normal variation that may give the false impression of extrusion or pathological subluxation. Second, the anterior intermeniscal ligament, located at the posterior aspect of the anterior meniscal root, is not indicative of a meniscal tear. The posterior fibers of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus attach to the anterior intermeniscal ligament.
It's important not to mistake these two structures for a meniscal tear or consider the anterior inter-meniscal ligament as a bucket handle tear.


In sagittal images obtained from the lateral meniscus, contrary to the medial meniscus, the lateral meniscus appears posterior to the anterior intermeniscal ligament.
Here, Linear Increased Signal Intensity Between the Anterior Horn of the Lateral Meniscus and the Anterior Intermeniscal Ligament is also visible.
This should also not be mistaken for a Meniscal Tear.
Lastly, the anterior intermeniscal ligament is variably referred to as the transverse meniscal ligament, ligamentum transversum genus, menisco-meniscal ligament, anterior transverse ligament, or inter-meniscal ligament, with reported prevalence ranges from 3.6% to 100%.
