Head shaving is one of the important Thaipusam rituals and a symbol of purification. Devotees can shave their head (and beard) as an offering (Kanikai) to Lord Murugan, and take a ritual bath before proceeding to the temple.
The ritual is said to be a form of sacrifice as hair is often linked with beauty. The hair takes about three months to grow, so it will serve as a reminder and a sense of attachment to God. Some people who are ill and cannot carry kavadi will pray to Lord Muruga for good health by shaving their heads bald. Some also do it in the hope of having a child.
