So, as RoadRunnerCoyote17 pointed out, a lot of Disney VHS captures are often overbrightened; I eventually figured out the culprit was my Dazzle not playing very nicely with Macrovision, so I decided to run a little experiment. This was on a totally different capture card...an Adaptec GameBridge.
This thing is ancient, and actually almost a scam. It was an attempt to cash in on early video game YouTubers by boasting its lag-free analog to digital conversion. In reality, it was almost exactly like the other capture cards they were putting out around the same time, they just managed to make software that could give you the output in real time. You know, like if you just used VirtualDub in the first place.
So, honestly, this capture card is junk. It doesn't even work on 64-bit Windows, they never made a driver for such, so I had to actually dig up an old Windows XP desktop just to use this stupid thing. But I think it's a good example of don't take your capture card for granted -- it does in fact make a difference! I've learned that the hard way...oy. But indeed, this one actually does play nicely with Macrovision, so the colors aren't overbrightened! Yay!
Interestingly enough though, this card can pick up Macrovision. If you try to capture using the included software, it stops after only a few seconds and refuses to let you. Since I just use VirtualDub though, that wasn't a problem.
