Gavi is an evergreen forest area in Pathanamthitta district, part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats.This place is located at an altitude of about 3,400 feet above sea level. Even in the peak of summer, Gavi is an area where the temperature reaches 10 degrees in the evening. Another feature of Gavi is the bald patches rich in grasslands. Here you can get a distant view of Sabarimala from a hilltop. The rare flowers and trees attract the nature lovers who come here. Gavi is also an ideal area for bird watchers. There is a collection of 323 species of birds like the mountain hornbill, woodpecker etc. The region is also home to wild animals like tigers, elephants and bears. 63 species of animals and 45 species of reptiles are estimated to be present in this region.
KSRTC buses are available from Pathanamthitta to Kumali via Gavi. These services depart from Pathanamthitta at 5.30 am, 6.30 am and 12.30 pm.
28 km from Vandiperiyar town on the Kollam-Madurai National Highway (NH 220). There are KSRTC bus services from Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam to Vandiperiyar. On the way from Vandiperiyar to Kumali, you have to turn right through Kannimara Estate to go to Gavi. Off-road vehicles such as jeeps are recommended as the route is very rugged. Such vehicles are available from Vandiperiyar and Kumily. After the first nine kilometers from Vandiperiyar, Vallakadav is the check post. Entry passes are available from the Forest Department check post at Vallakadav.
The nearest railway stations are Theni at a distance of 70 km and Kottayam at a distance of 120 km. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram airports are 200 and 250 km respectively.
