This is a 7 year old Formica subsericea colony that started off with just a single queen with us many years ago. Here is a link to the first video we did of this queen way back:

With patience and a little investment of time and money, a colony like this one is not all that difficult to achieve and maintain in all actuality. Fruit flies, crickets, honey, some ant juice and apples is the menu year round. They are active from March through November each year and are kept at room temperatures during the winter and just a little warmer during the summer if possible.
This colony spent many years at the "teach me" store in Raleigh, NC.
