This is a short video showing how to replace a faulty stator from a BMW F800ST. This component is known to fail in older bikes, causing the depleted battery. You can check if the stator is faulty by measuring the voltage over the battery or by measuring the output of the alternator directly.
Steps:
1: Dissaemble alternator cover + old stator
2. Install the new stator inside the cover
3. Put back the alternator cover, and new gasket + make sure the gasket contacts are clean
4. Put back/ connect wiring and regulator assembly
5. Put back the side covers
6. Check the voltage on the battery with the engine off, idle and at high rpm (+ 3000 RPM)
When measured over the battery, the charge should not:
drop below 12 V when turning the key
drop below 13-14 V when IDLE
drop below 13 V at HIGH RPM
Keep in mind the battery will only charge when the voltage generated by the alternator is above +12V. When the voltage is too high (+15V) this can indicate a regulator problem (the rectangular block with cooling ribs).
