Necessary and sufficient criteria for a group to be a direct (or semidirect) product of two of its proper subgroups with some examples. Beginning of the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups. We begin with the interesting result that a finite abelian p-group is cyclic if and only if it has a unique subgroup of order p.
