Shanghai exported the world’s first large-scale solid-state hydrogen storage device via sea transport on Tuesday. At around 5 p.m., at the Waigaoqiao Phase IV Terminal, the solid-state hydrogen storage device was loaded onto a cargo ship after being transported by trailer.
By turning the hydrogen into solid form using chemically reaction with magnesium alloys, this storage tank offers the ability to transport hydrogen at normal temperature and pressure.
More hydrogen could be contained in smaller vessels within solid materials that better fit automotive interiors, storing up to one ton of hydrogen, much more compared to its liquid counterparts, which can store only a few hundred kilograms.
Hydrogen was also the spotlight in this year’s International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Shanghai in June, highlighting China’s ambition for the future of energy.
