In 1867, a group of 10 men formed the Highland Park Building Company and purchased the land comprising Highland Park for $39,198. At that time, the area was mostly scattered farms and forested land.
Highland Park was named by Walter S. Gurnee. The town was named for its park-like setting at a high elevation relative to Lake Michigan.
Highland Park has been home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1936. The city is also home to several Frank Lloyd Wright houses.
Highland Park contains three public beaches and is also home to the North Shore Yacht Club.
The town is popular with professional athletes, as the Chicago Bears practice facility is located in nearby Lake Forest. Several members of the 1990s Chicago Bulls lived in Highland Park including Michael Jordan.
Highland Park was home to musicians Richard Marx and Billy Corgan and actor Gary Sinise attended Highland Park High School.
Highland Park was used as a shooting location for several movies including Ferris Bueller's Day off, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Ordinary People, and Risky Business.
