Hyder, Alaska

Most Southeast Alaskan communities are disconnected from the road system. Even to the State's capital in Juneau there are no options but thru surf or sky. Only three roads enter Southeast, to Hyder, with 700 miles before Skagway, and 350 miles yet til Haines. This year, I drove them all.

Hyder, Alaska had a population of thirtyfive when I visited in late March. Only the post office and one store were open. There wasn't even a Customs agent to greet me at the American border. I walked silently thru the townsite tranquilly forgotten by all but the elements, and filmed this video.
