Alone to a 1943 Crash on Blodgett Peak — 3 Lost in Colorado’s Forgotten Air Tragedy

This is a tough but meaningful solo hike. I hope people repeat it to pay their respects at the crash site.

I set out alone into the mountains near Colorado Springs to reach the remote crash site of a 1943 military aircraft — a Douglas C-49 that went down on the flanks of Blodgett Peak in heavy fog while flying from Pueblo to Denver. The plane crashed at 8,576 feet, and sadly, all three men aboard were lost.

There's no marked trail to this place as it goes up the ridge. It’s steep and rugged — just finding it required solid navigation and determination. But as I moved through the trees and eventually saw pieces of the wreckage scattered across the slope, I was reminded of just how close history is, even when it’s hidden away in the mountains.

This hike was more than just a physical challenge — it was a quiet moment to reflect on the sacrifices made during WWII, and to honor the crew who never made it home.
