Today, as a typical high-class house built in the late Joseon Dynasty, we visited Yeolhwadang, Hwallaejeong, Dongbyeoldang, and Anchae.
A walking tour.
Seongyojang is the former upper class residence of the Naebeon Lee (1703-1781) noble family of Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do Province. It was designated Important Folklore Material No. 5 in 1965. The meaning of "Seon", in Seongyojang, is boat. Gyeongpo Lake was directly in front of Seongyojang at the time it was built, thus making is accessible by boat. Gyeongpo Lake at one time reached the enormous circumference of 12km. Its size has reduced by 4km over the years and its depth has decreased by 1-2 meters.
It is said that 10 generations of descendents of Naebeon Lee have continued to live at Seongyojang. KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) has selected this residency as one of the top 10 most well preserved original dwellings in Korea that was constructed over the past 300 years.

Seongyojang House, located in the city of Gangneung, Gangwon Province of Korea, is a Korean traditional Hanok house of a noble family. From the founder Lee Naebeon, the house has been inherited and well-preserved through 10 generations for 300 years. The house was designated as Important Folklore Material No. 5 of Korea in 1965.
Seongyojang House is a big mansion consisting of several buildings and 12 gates, which is typical of an upper-class family’s house. The house these days has turned to a place for cultural education for visitors while offsprings of the founder Lee are still residing in a part of the mansion. Some of the buildings are open to visitors for overnight Hanok Stay and some other buildings have become museums and classrooms for cultural learning.
Seongyojang House gained a lot of popularity and was visited by more tourists especially after a famous K-drama “The Princess' Man” was filmed in the place.
In 2000, KBS (Korea Broadcasting System) selected Seongyojang House as the best traditional Korean house in the country.
