Palace Royal Guard Changing Ceremony

The Palace Royal Guard Changing Ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace has been held as a traditional cultural event since 2002 to reenact the royal guard changing procedure that occurred during the Joseon Dynasty. Based on the records of Joseonwangjosillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty), which describes the implementation of the Palace Royal Guard System in 1469 (1st year of King Yejong’s reign), the ceremony focuses on presenting the uniforms and weapons to provide a glimpse into the appearance of soldiers during the early Joseon period.

1. The royal guards on duty are assigned to the Gwanghwamun Gate. At the first sound of the drums, the guards taking over leave for the Gate.
2. At the second sound of the drums, the royal guards going on- and off-duty make a military salute and identify themselves.
3. The royal guards are assigned to their duties under the command of their leader, who checks the state of the Gate and the conduct of the soldiers.
4. The head of the royal guards and the officers who are off duty prepare to leave. At the third sound of the drums, they leave the Gate under the command of their leader.

수문장 교대의식

2002년부터 이어져오고 있는 경복궁 수문장 교대의식은 조선시대 왕실 호위문화를 상징하는 대표적인 전통문화행사입니다. ‘조선왕조실록’예종(睿宗) 1년(1469) 수문장제도의 시행 기록을 역사적 근거로 하여 재구성된 이 행사는 당시의 복식 및 무기 등을 복원하여 조선 전기(前期) 군인들의 모습을 생생하게 재현하는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.

1. 당직수문군이 광화문에 배치된 후 초엄이 울리면 교대 수문군이 출발하여 광화문에 도착 한다.
2. 이엄이 울리면 교대 수문장과 당직 수문장이 군례 및 신분 확인을 한다.
3. 교대 수문군이 수문장의 호령으로 광화문에 배치되고 광화문 경계 상황과 수문군의 근태를 점고 한다.
4. 당직 수문장과 수문군이 퇴장준비를 하고 삼엄이 울리면 수문장의 지휘 하에 퇴장한다.
