What are X Spaces?
X Spaces, formerly known as Twitter Spaces, is a feature on the X platform that facilitates live audio conversations. It has been available since 2020 but has gained more significant attention recently, partly due to its use by prominent figures. Essentially, it serves as a digital space where users can host, listen to, and participate in real-time audio discussions.
Who can participate in an X Space and in what roles?
The creator of an X Space is designated as the host. The host has the ability to invite up to 2 co-hosts. A maximum of 10 individuals can have speaking privileges simultaneously within a single Space. Anyone on the X network can join a Space as a listener, regardless of whether they follow the host, as Spaces are public by default. Listeners have the option to join anonymously and can interact by sending speaker requests, viewing other attendees, sending emoji reactions, creating and sharing short clips of the recording, and viewing or leaving comments in the chat.
How can users access and join X Spaces?
Users can join and participate in X Spaces through the mobile app (iOS or Android). On mobile, there is a dedicated "Spaces" tab in the left-side menu, and live Spaces can also appear in the main timeline. When joining on mobile, users can see details like the Space title, topics, hosts, co-hosts, speakers, and the live listener count. On the desktop version, users are limited to only listening to Spaces and cannot create or host them. Access on desktop is primarily achieved by using a direct link to the specific Space.
How does one host an X Space?
Hosting an X Space is an exclusive function of the mobile app. To initiate a Space, navigate to the "Spaces" tab and tap the microphone icon with a "+" sign. When setting up a Space, the host needs to add a relevant Title, select up to 3 Topics, decide whether to Record Space, and choose between starting the Space now or scheduling it for a future date.
Can X Spaces be scheduled for a later time?
Yes, hosts have the capability to schedule X Spaces. Up to 10 Spaces can be scheduled in advance, for dates up to 30 days in the future. Scheduled Spaces can be managed and viewed via a calendar icon on the main Spaces page. Users interested in attending a scheduled Space can sign up to receive notification reminders.
How is speaking access managed within an X Space?
In an X Space, hosts, co-hosts, and speakers are the individuals who can speak. The host maintains full control over who has speaking privileges and can remove users. While the default setting for speaker permissions is "those invited to speak," the host can adjust this to "Everyone," "People you follow," or "Only people you invite to speak." Hosts can also add new speakers and co-hosts during the live conversation, and listeners have the option to send requests to the host to be granted speaking access.
Are X Spaces recorded and how are they ended?
Hosts have the option to record a Space when they are creating it. A recording symbol indicates that the Space is being recorded. After a Space concludes, the host can choose to post the recording, edit its starting point, or delete it. Recorded Spaces remain accessible for anyone to listen to until they are deleted by the host. A Space can be manually ended by the host, or it can end automatically if any of X's community guidelines are violated.
How are X Spaces integrated with X Communities?
X has integrated Spaces into its Community feature. Within a Community, administrators and moderators have the ability to create new Spaces specifically for that group. Members of a Community are notified when a Space is created and can see live Community Spaces highlighted in the Spacebar at the top of their Home timeline.
