Guitar as Air Pump: Martin vs Taylor vs Cordoba Turbo Guitar [Part 2 Sound Test]

Is a guitar that pumps a lot of air, in fact, a more efficient guitar? Should a great sounding guitar be an efficient guitar? Just Like many expert guitar builders, we also think so. In Part 1 of our "Guitar as Air Pump" series we tapped (and thumped) the soundboards of 3 similarly sized guitars to see which pumped more air. In this Part 2 video, we play those same guitars, to see how they sound. We made one modification: We added steel strings and the TurboTail to the Cordoba C5 classical guitar, so that it could handle the higher tension of steel strings.

The three Guitars:
Martin 00 X-Series
Taylor Academy 12
Cordoba C5 Classical Guitar

The big difference among the three is that both the Martin and the Taylor are steel-string guitars. They have more rigid X bracing. Plus, the necks of both join the body at the 14th fret. This adds rigidity to the soundboard by moving the bridge closer to the guitar's narrow waist. The Cordoba C5 is a classical guitar, so it has relatively delicate fan bracing. The neck joins the body at the 12th fret, which puts the bridge right in the center of the lower bout. This gives the soundboard of the Cordoba an advantage over the other two in terms of potential for the soundboard to deflect. Greater top deflection is what a guitar needs to pump more air.

t’s a theory many top luthiers believe: the more a guitar top flexes, the more air it moves, and the louder and more resonant the tone. But how does such a guitar sound? We ask that you be the judge. Please send us your comments.
