Some of these images are the work of photographer and longtime resident of Tangier, Paul Servant (1878-1958) up to 1930s. Scanned from a large collection of medium-format, glass plate negatives in the collection of the Tangier American Institute for Moroccan Studies. Donated by art collector and philanthropist Donald Angus (1908–2001), who had acquired them in the 1970s at Casabarata
Other photographs were taken from the book by Philip Abensur, ‘’Tanger Entre Orient et Occident’’ (2009)
The rest of the images are from Antonio Cavilla (Gibraltar, 1867 – Tánger 1908). He was a British professional photographer who started at the Cavilla & Bruzón photography studio in Gibraltar. In 1885, he opened his own studio in Tangier, where he worked until his death in 1908.
There are also some random photos found on the web with no credits. We’d like to thank all these photographers and the anonymous ones for keeping the legacy of Tangier alive, a city that evolved from a crossroad of cultures into a modern city that retains its cosmopolitan heritage while embracing new growth.
