In this series I meet and collaborate with American artist Sandi Hester.

This series will be spread over 3 parts. In part 1 we will be drawing each others portraits and attempting to loosen up through a series of drawing exercises.

Sandi is a professional artist whose work is both loose and bold. She works across a range of mediums including oils, pastels, crayons and gouache. She also has a love of keeping sketchbooks and you'll most likely find her sketching all the things in her house. For Sandi, the subject, colour, texture and enjoyment of the creative process are very important. And you see this in her colourful Youtube channel here:    / sandihester  
Sandi says of her work: I'm not interested in the exactness - I'm interested in how it makes me feel. Painting this way tells you more about the image or scene than when grasping for the details.

This is what I really want to hone in on in this project with Sandi. I find that I can get too wrapped up in capturing a true likeness of a person and find I work so tightly that I strangle the life out my portraits, so with Sandi's guidance I want to work through this.

I'm really excited to collaborate with Sandi and share this creative process with you. Drawing portraits isn't necessarily a go-to subject of mine but I want to push myself out of my comfort zone, work with materials I'm not familiar with and create some new exciting work.
