পৃথিবীর মানচিত্রে কিছু শহর থাকে। যারা শুধু শহর নয়, তারা নিজেরাই একেকটি সভ্যতা। আর সেই সব শহরের তালিকায় সবচেয়ে উজ্জ্বল যে নামটি জ্বলে ওঠে তা হলো ইস্তাম্বুল। যাকে শুধু মানচিত্রে দেখা যায় না। বরং অনুভব করা যায়, ইতিহাসের রক্তধারায়, সভ্যতার শিরায় আর মানবতার গভীর স্মৃতিতে। শুধুমাত্র ইস্তাম্বুলই একসঙ্গে দুই মহাদেশকে জুড়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। আজকের পর্বে আমরা জানবো সেই ঐতিহাসিক নগরী ইস্তাম্বুল সম্পর্কে।

ইস্তাম্বুল এমন এক শহর যার ইতিহাস তিনটি ভিন্ন সাম্রাজ্যের জন্ম, বিকাশ ও পতনের সাক্ষী। খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৭ম শতকে ছোট্ট গ্রিক উপনিবেশ ‘বাইজেন্টিয়াম’ থেকে শুরু করে শহরটি কনস্টান্টিনোপল হয়ে রোমান ও বাইজেন্টাইন সাম্রাজ্যের কেন্দ্রবিন্দু ছিল। ১৪৫৩ সালে সুলতান মুহাম্মদ ফাতিহের বিজয়ের পর এটি অটোমান সাম্রাজ্যের রাজধানী হয় এবং নতুন ইতিহাসের সূচনা ঘটে। হাজিয়া সোফিয়া, সুলেমানিয়া মসজিদ, টপকাপি প্যালেসের মতো স্থাপত্য শহরের ঐতিহ্য বহন করে। বারবার ধ্বংসের মুখোমুখি হলেও শহরটি নতুন করে উঠে দাঁড়িয়েছে। আধুনিক তুরস্কের জন্মের পর ইস্তাম্বুল হয়ে উঠেছে বৈশ্বিক বাণিজ্য, ভ্রমণ ও সংস্কৃতির কেন্দ্র। বসফরাসের সৌন্দর্য, সাম্রাজ্যের স্মৃতি আর বৈচিত্র্যময় জীবনযাপনে ইস্তাম্বুল আজও বিশ্বের অন্যতম আকর্ষণীয় শহর, যেখানে মানুষ আসে ইতিহাসকে অনুভব করতে।
