The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (which looks after Shakespeare's homes and museums) is rebranding the Bard—because apparently, celebrating his genius is “harmful” and upholds "white supremacy" so it must be "decolonised".
But how could Britain colonise itself? And how was Shakespeare, writing in the 16th century, complicit in empire-building that hadn’t even happened yet?
In this video, I look at the absurdity of rewriting history to fit modern ideological narratives. The Trust warns visitors that Shakespeare’s work may be offensive, and has secured funding for "decolonising" Bollywood dance workshops in his honour. How Shakespearian!
Meanwhile, diversity coordinators bleat about imaginary "harmfulness", Roald Dahl is getting clunky rewrites, and academics are insisting Hamlet is racist.
Half the problem is that diversity coordinators have to do something to justify their salaries. They can't just sit there and say "yeah actually everything's fine, Shakespeare isn't racist".
Woke extremists pretend that Western civilisation - which has done so much good for the world - is an evil that must be purged. This isn't just stupid, it's feeding into perceptions of alienation and unfair treatment among the native British population, and widening the schism in society.
