The Navy landing pattern is an eliptical pattern vs the civilian box pattern. In the eliptical pattern an aircraft is both descending and changing heading to eventually align the aircraft straight with the runway for landing. This pattern, which is more difficult to master than the box pattern, is more effective for making quick aircraft recoveries.
