Lao New Year Festival – “ບູນປີໃໝ່ລາວ”
Lao New Year, or Boun Pi Mai, is one of the most important festivals in Laos. It is similar to Thailand’s Songkran and other Southeast Asian New Year celebrations. The festival is held annually from April 14 to 16, marking the transition to a new year according to the traditional Lao lunar calendar.

1. Meaning of Boun Pi Mai Lao
This festival holds deep religious and cultural significance. It marks the farewell to the old year and the welcoming of the new year. It is a time for joy, fresh beginnings, and expressing gratitude and respect to parents, elders, and asking for forgiveness.

2. Main Activities of Lao New Year
Bathing Buddha statues: Sacred Buddha images are brought out for the public to pour scented water over them for blessings.

The water often contains fragrant flowers, such as dok champa (frangipani), the national flower of Laos.

3. Baci Ceremony (Bai Sri Su Khwan)
A traditional ritual to call back the soul (khwan) to the body, bringing good fortune and peace for the new year.

4. Pouring Water on Elders
This symbolizes respect and gratitude toward elders. People pour water gently over their hands and ask for blessings and forgiveness for any wrongdoings.

5. Water Splashing Fun
Much like Thai Songkran, people splash water on one another as a way to have fun and wash away bad luck or negativity.

6. Miss Songkran Processions and Parades
In some cities, there are parades featuring the Miss Songkran (Nang Sangkhan) representing seven goddesses of the days of the week, accompanied by traditional performances and cultural displays.

7. Sand Stupa Building
People gather sand at temples to build small sand stupas, which are decorated with flags and flowers. This symbolizes merit-making and honoring sacred traditions.

บุญปีใหม่ลาว “ບູນປີໃໝ່ລາວ”
เป็นหนึ่งในเทศกาลที่สำคัญที่สุดของประเทศลาว ซึ่งคล้ายคลึงกับเทศกาลสงกรานต์ของไทยและประเทศอื่นๆ ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยจัดขึ้นในช่วง วันที่ 14 – 16 เมษายน ของทุกปี ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเปลี่ยนปีตามปฏิทินจันทรคติของลาว
1. ความหมายของบุญปีใหม่ลาว
เป็นเทศกาลที่มีความหมายทางศาสนาและวัฒนธรรม เป็นการส่งท้ายปีเก่า ต้อนรับปีใหม่ และถือเป็นช่วงเวลาแห่งความสุข การเริ่มต้นสิ่งใหม่ๆ รวมถึงการแสดงความกตัญญูต่อพ่อแม่ ผู้ใหญ่ และการขอขมาลาโทษ
2. กิจกรรมสำคัญในบุญปีใหม่ลาว
การนำพระพุทธรูปออกมาให้ประชาชนได้สรงน้ำเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล
น้ำที่ใช้มักผสมด้วยดอกไม้หอม เช่น ดอกจำปาลาว (ดอกลีลาวดี)
3. พิธีบายศรีสู่ขวัญ
เพื่อเรียกขวัญให้กลับมาอยู่กับตัว เป็นการเริ่มต้นปีใหม่อย่างเป็นมงคล
4. รดน้ำดำหัวผู้ใหญ่
แสดงความเคารพ ขอพร ขอขมาในสิ่งที่อาจล่วงเกิน เป็นกิจกรรมที่อบอุ่นและ ซึ่งเป็นการแสดงออกถึงความกตัญญู
5. การเล่นน้ำ
เช่นเดียวกับสงกรานต์ไทย ชาวลาวจะสาดน้ำกันเพื่อความสนุกสนานและเป็นการชำระล้างสิ่งไม่ดีออกไป
6. แห่นางนางสังขารและขบวนแห่ต่าง ๆ
ในบางเมืองจะมีขบวนแห่นางนางสังขาร การแสดงพื้นบ้าน ซึ่งมีการแห่นางสังขานทั้ง 7 ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของเทพีประจำวันเกิด
7. การก่อเจดีย์ทราย
นำทรายมาก่อเป็นเจดีย์ที่วัด ตกแต่งด้วยธง ดอกไม้ เพื่อเป็นการสะสมบุญ
