We think breakfast is timeless. Eggs, toast, coffee, maybe cereal. A proper start to the day. But for most of history, breakfast was none of those things.
In Tudor England, breakfast was suspicious, optional, and often barely a meal at all. There was no set time, no special food, and no expectation that everyone should eat first thing in the morning. Laborers might grab bread and ale before work. The gentry often delayed eating while they handled correspondence or household business. At court, breakfast was informal and easily skipped.
In this video, we look at the forgotten history of breakfast, from medieval ideas about digestion and morality, through Tudor habits around class and labor, and into the moment when breakfast finally became a named, expected meal. Along the way we talk about bread, small beer, pottage, second breakfast, and why modern breakfast feels far more emotionally loaded than it ever did in the past.
