H7N9 Influenza Virus: An Explanation of its Pandemic Potential

This webinar provides background information on the biology, transmission and pathogenicity of influenza viruses, and focuses on differences within the avian strains. The difference between highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses and low pathogenic viruses is discussed. Emphasis is on the current concerns regarding H7N9, a strain which has caused more than 1,500 cases of influenza in China. Additionally, the risk assessment tool used to assess the pandemic potential of viruses, and the results for this particular strain is described. Lastly, influenza viruses and methods for worker protection and overall ways to avoid exposure to avian influenza viruses are addressed.
