The Professional Standards Review Organization (PSRO) is a committee attached to a Medical Control Authority (MCA) in the State of Michigan. The stated purpose of PSRO is to "...facilitate system-wide continuous quality assurance and improvement of EMS to ensure consistent, high-quality pre-hospital care...". The rank and file believe that PSRO is a shadowy cabal of crusty, out-of-practice EMS admins who sit ready to punish foolish little EMTs and Paramedics who don't read their protocols. I'm here to pull back the curtain a little and explain who they are and why they exist. Hopefully I can put some fears to rest and teach EMS providers what to expect when they get that infamous email in their inbox.
Tips for writing a response to a PSRO request for information:
-Don't assume they already know the story. Start from the beginning.
-Be specific. Cite time, date, location, all the particulars related to the incident.
-Too little information will definitely result in an invitation to talk to PSRO face-to-face.
-Be professional. Keep your emotions in check. Avoid overreaction or exaggeration.
-Don't blame others or deflect responsibility. Let PSRO come to their own conclusions.
-If you messed up, admit it! You're unlikely to be able to cover up a mistake so don't bother.
-Don't be afraid to tell the truth. You may have screwed up. So what? Who hasn't?
-Think about what integrity means to you. Write a response you would be proud to show your mom.
-Your partner might be reading your response, so be careful with what you say.
-Oh yes, your partner has to write their own response. Everyone gets their day in court!
-If you don't know, don't guess. Don't commit to it unless you're sure.
