"Shams," commissioned by the the Dallas group, Verdigris Ensemble, is based on the poetry of Rumi and his interactions with Shams Tabrizi. Music by Sahba Aminikia, digital artwork by Kevork Mourad. He creates animated imagery -- and then 'paints' over it, live, during the performance (that's his hand you see). Translation by Zara Houshmand.
This is excerpted from the song, "Die, die, die" -- as in, to die to this world, die to your self, in order to transcend it.
The world premiere of "Shams" - April 14-16, 2023, at the Moody Performance Hall - will also feature a string quartet from the Dallas Symphony.
