Hurricane Andrew was one of the few hurricanes to strike the United States as a Category 5. At the time, in 1992, it was the most expensive natural disaster in the nation's history. After devastating Homestead, Florida, and surrounding communities, it moved across the Gulf of Mexico to strike Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane. In south Florida, 25,000 homes were destroyed, and 100,000 homes were damaged. Much of the destruction was later determined to be a result of poor building practices and poor construction, for a hurricane zone. Over a million people lost electricity, while dozens lost their lives during and after the storm.
