This is DAY 16 of my month long April series "30 Eighties Metal Riffs In 30 Days."

Today's riff is by my favorite metal band of all time, the mighty Savatage!
Guitarist Criss Oliva (RIP) and brother and vocalist Jon Oliva created a masterpiece with their 1987 album Hall Of The Mountain King. The riff we are exploring today is the title track "Hall Of The Mountain King."

Aside from being awesome, an important part of this riff's sound is the guitar tuning. Here is how the original was tuned:
6th string= C
5th string =G
4th string = C
3rd string = F
2nd string = A
1st string = D

An easy way to think of this is that you simply tune your entire guitar down a whole step so that you are in D standard tuning. From there you tune your low (6th) string down another whole step to C.
I like to think of this as simply Drop D tuning down a whole step.
On the video I am using a pedal by Digitech to allow me to Drop my tuning by a whole step. The guitar is tuned dropped D but the pedal takes the entire guitar down another whole step. One thing about doing this though is there is a bit of tone lost, so the tones aren't the greatest on this video, but they sound decent in the mix. If you don't have a Drop pedal but still want to play the riff just tune to drop D and play using the TAB and it will sound great, although you won't be able to play to the album.

Otherwise, playing this riff shouldn't pose to many problems, it's just a blast to play.
