Prevent Pull Back Accidents - How to Prepare Your Horse to Stand Tied Confidently

“Just let him figure it out that pulling isn’t the solution” - this argument is used often to justify hard tying to teach horses “to give” to pressure and to teach him “patience”.
Just think about why horses pull back:
There are several instinctive reflex points on a horse’s body. When a horse feels pressure/touch on these areas, this will trigger a fight/push into pressure reactions. This reaction is INSTICTIVE and not rational!
One of these points is right behind the ears - the poll. Everybody who already had a foal, worked with very green horses, knows how easy it is to trigger a defensive or even pull back reaction.
This reaction will happen much more when the horse is already in a worried/fearful/anxious state.
Horses who haven’t learnt yet how to give to pressure and follow the feel of the halter, will instinctively pull back, especially when they feel worried for another reason (being alone, unconfident in environment)
It is in our responsibility to teach our horses to THINK and give rather than instinctively pull against pressure.
