Manami Toyota • The Greatest Women's Wrestler Of All Time... (Video Essay)

Hello everyone, welcome back to EMPIREPRO.. or if you’re new here, thank you for clicking on this video. Today I want to get back to my longer format style videos, focusing on a wrestler I've admired greatly ever since discovering her..The flying angel, Manami Toyota.

Making her debut at just 16 years old for Japan's top Joshi, AJW in 1987, Toyota grew to become one of, if not the most successful and influential women's wrestlers of all time. And maybe even that glowing statement could be considered insulting, as you could easily make the argument that Manami Toyota is one of the GOATS of Pro Wrestling, regardless of gender.

So without further ado, let's take a look at the incredible career of the Joshi Queen, the flying angel, Manami Toyota.


CHAPTER 1: UNDER THE LIGHTS
A plucky young 16 year old Manami Toyota would make her debut for All Japan Women's promotion, AJW, on August 5th 1987 against Sachiko Nakamura. Thrusted into a violent, ruthless style of wrestling, it really was adapt or die in AJW during the late 80s, early 90s. And it's safe to say the career path that lay ahead of Toyota, she certainly adapted, and more than that, she helped change the landscape for what was possible for Joshi wrestlers at the time.

It wasn't long before Manami Toyota was a household name for fans of pro wrestling, especially in Japan. Her big break came in her second year, on the first Wrestlemarinpiad show at Yokohama Arena, on May 6, 1989. Teaming with Mima Shimoda as the Tokyo Sweethearts, defeating Etsuko Mita and Toshiyo Yamada in a match that practically stole the show from even the more established veterans on the card. Which already included the likes of Bull Nakano, Lioness Asuka and Alundra Blaze to name a few.
