“101” was so named because she was the 1st female brown bear to be radio collared during the 1st season of tracking by the National Park Service at Lake Clark’s Chinitna Bay.
Coastal brown bears and their inland grizzly bears are the same species. Differences in size and temperament are due to an abundant coastal diet and the predictability of human viewers.
Coastal brown bears consume sage grasses in the open meadows and dig up clams at low tide. At least until the Salmon run starts later in the summer.
Our first mid-day adventure at Nat Hab’s Bear Camp featured 101 and her cubs digging for clams off the beach right in front of camp. With that we were off to a great 4 days.
