Live bird markets are considered to play a key role in the epidemiology of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in South and Southeast Asia.
Yet, the configurations of trading networks, in which markets are embedded, is often unknown, and their impact on viral spread and maintenance poorly understood.
Guillaume Fournie from the Royal Veterinary College (UK) presents how interdisciplinary approaches combining epidemiological and ethnographic studies, mathematical and phylodynamic modelling, have been used to assess the influence of poultry trading and farming practices on AIV transmission dynamics, and to identify suitable targets for control and surveillance measures.
This recording is a part of a series of talks on the critical impact of modelling during early pandemics and in shaping the future of surveillance systems. Our aim? To broaden the modelling landscape to meet the public health challenges we face today.
All talks are available in our YouTube playlist - "Modelling perspectives: beyond numbers".
