Cape York May '23. North to South on the Portland Roads Road. Depth Approx 610mm. Drifted soft sand on a concrete base. Nissan Patrol towing a Tvan. No Crocs spotted. Air vents taped up. Feet stayed dry. We had crossed it at 800mm deep 12 months earlier but decided thatonce was enough at that depth. At this depth it was 'challenging' enough. Toward the far side when the car swings to the left into the current I thought the Tvan had begun to float in what was a fairly fast current, but in hindsight it was the front diff lock pulling straight ahead as we came off a sand bank. T'was a butt clenching moment made more so by the fact that if things went wrong we were on our own. Out of view to the right of the car was a drowned 4wd, with only the very top of it's roof above water.
