Firefighters doused a blaze that engulfed a low-rise multi-residential building on Ogilvie Road Thursday evening, with the local city councillor hailing their fast work.
It was a “devastating evening,” Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney said.
No one was injured and a pet was rescued thanks to “the quick reaction, saving pet and human life alike.”
“Stay tuned as we prepare for the community that has been reaching out to want to help.”
The Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army will be helping the residents displaced by the two-alarm fire, Ottawa Fire Services said.
Multiple 911 calls came in reporting the fire at the building between Palmerston Drive and Cadboro Road, according to the fire department, which reported crews were on the scene at about 9 p.m.
Firefighters found “a massive amount of smoke and flames.”
They searched the building using flashlights to make sure no one was trapped inside, rescuing a dog from an upper unit and reuniting the pet with family.
Firefighters had to evacuate the building while water was directed on the flames from above using a ladder truck.
They headed back inside to douse any “hot spots” after the fire was declared under control at 10:20 p.m.
A fire investigator was on the scene to determine the cause.
