Darius Milhaud - Concerto pour marimba (et vibraphone) et orchestre
Katarzyna Myćka - marimba
An-yi Chang - piano
Darius Milhaud was very surprised about the marimba, a new instrument on the classical music stage which he saw during his visit in America. This impression inspired him to write the first concerto for marimba in the music history. Its classical form with three movements fast-slow-fast makes a real concerto out of this colourful piece of music. Milhaud found the 4 octave marimba at that time not too lyrical that’s why he decided to include the vibraphone with its sustained sound and pedal which offered a different sound dimension and a very quite long-lasting sound, perfect for the middle movement.
Since 1947 as the concerto was born marimba was not too popular, Milhaud decided to make a version for piano as well and named it „Suite for piano & orchestra“. As we can see - this piece helped marimba to find its place in the classical music stage and now there are many other concerterti, some of them way more popular then Milhaud’s one - to name a few composers: Ney Rosauro, Emmanuel Séjourné, Peter Klatzow, Keiko Abe, Anna Ignatowicz-Glinska, Eric Sammut…
