Clearing defensible space to reduce wildfire risk at a property in southern California.
The goal of defensible space is to reduce the ability of a fire to "ladder" from ground vegetation up into the tree canopy and to reduce the amount of vegetation available to burn.
In this video I will be using a hedge clipper attachment to thin out some Sage and Laurel Sumac (Malosma). I am aiming for a 50% reduction in vegetative mass.
If this looks aggressive to some folks, understand that this is a yearly activity that does not harm the plants. The native scrub has adapted to both extreme drought as well as seasonal fire cycles. It can be taken down to it's root-stock in the middle of the summer without risk to the plant. In about 2 seasons the vegetation will have grown back to where it was when I started.
