Shoot thru umbrellas offer a excellent source of soft light. What I like to do is position the shoot thru umbrella just out of the frame. Shoot thru umbrellas unlike a softbox do spread light everywhere so you have to use caution.
This video mainly explains to pay attention to the position of the speedlight. The whole umbrella will not be the source of light if the speedlight is not shooting thru the center of the umbrella. Please watch video for demonstration.
