It's March 1945. The Allies are advancing into Germany, and Ninth Air Force relentlessly pushes its P-47 Thunderbolt tactical fighter bombers forward. Near Aachen, Germany, Army engineers beef up an airfield to support P-47 operations. Designated Airfield Y-46, this is the first American airstrip completed inside Germany. In two months, the war against Germany will be won.
Color Kodachrome film shows rolls of Square Mesh Track wire -- SMT -- a British product for stabilizing the ground for an airfield.
Prefabricated Burlap Surfacing -- asphalt-impregnated jute -- is rolled out in overlapping strips.
And Pierced Steel Planking -- PSP -- helps secure parking areas for the heavy Thunderbolts of the 365th Fighter Group. The Thunderbolts operate while the base is still under construction.
Wrecked German aircraft, including what look like remnants of a Ju-88, are on the field. Close to the action, the bomb-carrying P-47s take off for combat.
