PORTUGAL e a AFRICA COLONIAL de 1914 a 1918 I Centenário da Grande Guerra I Estudos do Capoeira

Na capoeira muito se fala da influência africana no surgimento da nossa arte — dança, luta e expressão cultural.
Mas, quando olhamos para a história, percebemos que os estudos sobre o continente africano ainda são quase inexistentes na comunidade capoeirística.

👉 Se falamos de Capoeira Angola, precisamos compreender o caminho daquela região, mergulhar em temas como escravidão, colonialismo e resistência.
É por isso que o Museu da Capoeira apresenta esta coleção de vídeos ligados aos estudos africanos, aberta a todos os praticantes: da Angola, da Regional e também da Capoeira Contemporânea.

✨ Nesta parte da coleção, vamos entender como a Primeira Guerra Mundial afetou diretamente os territórios africanos de Portugal.

A Alemanha declarou guerra a Portugal em 1916, quando, a pedido da Inglaterra, atrasamos os navios alemães que estavam nos nossos portos. Nesse momento, Portugal enviou tropas para a Europa — mas em África o conflito já estava em curso.

Os alemães invadiram Quionga, no norte de Moçambique, antes mesmo da guerra oficial começar. E o objetivo era claro: construir a chamada Mittelafrika, ligando as colónias alemãs da África Ocidental (a sul de Angola) à África Oriental (a norte de Moçambique).

Entre 1914 e 1915, Portugal enviou expedições a África, oficialmente pelo Ministério das Colónias — para não provocar diretamente a Alemanha. Mas em 1916, pressionado, o governo manda tropas despreparadas, sem estrutura, sem conhecimento do território, e milhares de soldados morreram: não apenas pela guerra, mas também por animais selvagens, doenças tropicais e pela dura realidade do ambiente africano.

A guerra em África mobilizou quase 50 mil homens portugueses. Morreram milhares — muito mais do que na Flandres. Apesar das críticas de incapacidade, Portugal conseguiu manter intactas as suas colónias.

In capoeira, much is said about the African influence in the birth of our art — dance, fight, and cultural expression.
But when we look deeper, we realize that serious studies on African history are still almost absent in the capoeira community.

👉 If we speak of Capoeira Angola, we must also understand the history of that region: slavery, colonialism, and resistance.
That’s why the Capoeira Museum presents this special collection of videos connected to African studies, open to all practitioners — whether Angola, Regional, or Contemporary Capoeira.

✨ In this part of the series, we explore how World War I directly impacted Portugal’s African territories.

Germany declared war on Portugal in 1916, after we delayed German ships in our ports at the request of the British. Portugal then organized and sent the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps to Europe — but in Africa, the threat was already present.

The Germans invaded Quionga, in northern Mozambique, even before the official start of the war. Their goal was ambitious: to build Mittelafrika, connecting their colonies in West Africa (south of Angola) with those in East Africa (north of Mozambique).

Between 1914 and 1915, Portugal sent expeditions to Africa under the Ministry of the Colonies, trying not to provoke Germany directly. But in 1916, pressured to act, Portugal deployed unprepared troops, with little knowledge of the African terrain. Thousands died — not only in combat, but also from wild animals, tropical diseases, and the harsh realities of the environment.

The war in Africa mobilized nearly 50,000 Portuguese soldiers. Thousands died — far more than in the Flanders. Despite harsh criticism and doubts about Portugal’s ability to manage its colonies, in the end Portugal succeeded in keeping its African territories intact.
