The exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) system is an emissions-based policy that re-routes some exhaust gas back into the air intake manifold. This results in a layer of carbon buildup on the intake valves and stems, which often leads to sealant issues. The hot gasses that enter the combustion process also reduce engine power and performance.
