ISKCON Files, an in-depth series uncovering the lesser-known history of ISKCON and the struggles and challenges faced by Vishwaguru Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, from some of his own trusted leaders.

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, began the movement in 1966. At the age of seventy, he journeyed to the West aboard a cargo ship, enduring two heart attacks during the voyage. ISKCON was thus founded through immense personal sacrifice and with the support of sincere seekers who were earnestly searching for the meaning of life.

However, the journey was not without challenges. As the movement grew, certain disciples of Srila Prabhupada were entrusted with positions of responsibility to help carry the mission forward. Over time, material ambitions began to surface, and Srila Prabhupada faced serious difficulties—sometimes even from within his own leadership.

In Episode 5 of Chapter 1, in the year 1972, two disciples of Srila Prabhupada—Tamal Krishna Goswami and Shyamasundar Prabhu—made a critical misjudgment to cancel the sale agreement for the Juhu Project in Mumbai, instead of aligning with Srila Prabhupada’s clear orders and vision for building the temple in Juhu, believing the challenges to be too cumbersome.

Some leaders within ISKCON, at that time, made statements about Srila Prabhupada that were deeply inappropriate—statements one would not ordinarily even imagine expressing about one’s spiritual master. Despite this, Srila Prabhupada did not harbour any ill feelings toward his disciples. Instead, out of deep compassion, he consistently sought to protect them from committing grave offenses, guiding them patiently and mercifully toward proper spiritual consciousness.
