Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Explained | Funds & BRS vs. Legacy

The TSP Funds:
L-Fund: Lifecycle Fund – A diversified mix of the G, F, C, S, & I Funds that gets rebalanced each quarter to become less risky as it gets closer to the Target Date. The Target Date is the number of the Fund and should be roughly around the year you plan on drawing retirement.

G-Fund: Short-Term Securities / Cash – The safest fund but with the lowest return rate. This fund is what you typically stay in once you reach retirement and is designed to keep up with inflation.

F-Fund: Bonds – This fund holds investment-grade bonds and can hedge against Stock Market dips and crashes.

C-Fund: Dow Jones Industrial Average Index Fund – This fund somewhat indexes itself to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, it doesn’t overlap with the companies within the S-Fund. Holding the S-Fund & C-Fund together, you would hold virtually all of the stocks within the U.S. Market.

S-Fund: S&P500 – This fund indexes itself to the S&P500. The S&P500 holds the best 500 companies within the U.S. Stock Market. It typically averages a 10% average.

I-Fund: International Stocks – This fund invests in a handful of stocks outside the U.S. Market. It currently has no holdings in Russia and minimal holdings in China. International Stocks have been known to be a hedge against U.S. turmoil, however this doesn’t work when the rest of the world is in turmoil as well.
